A Survey of On-Screen Keyboards

There are many different types of on-screen keyboards available on the market, many with a variety of keyboard layouts along with many different types of input strategies. AT practitioners use these in conjunction with switches or pointing devices to find the best combination for their clients. However, inspite of the variety of options, there remains very little evidence as to the efficiency and acceptability of many of these systems. Some of the questions this research project would like to answer include:

  • Which on-screen keyboards allow the user the greatest degree of independence and why?
  • What is the most efficient on-screen layout for each type of input method?
  • What are the best combinations of on-screen keyboard + input device for different disabling conditions?

If you, or someone you know who uses on-screen keyboards, would like to take part in this study please email Aejaz Zahid
